Who runs .org

.org is a generic top-level domain, delegated in 1985, and IANA records Public Interest Registry (PIR) as its sponsoring organisation, in the United States of America. The registry points registrants at publicinterestregistry.org for registration services. That delegation record was last updated on 10 Mar 2026; if the registry has changed hands since, IANA is where it shows up first.

Who can register a .org

Anyone may register: Public Interest Registry states that .ORG is open and unrestricted. Its registry agreement with ICANN, signed 30 June 2019, is recorded as Base, Non-Sponsored — no sponsoring community stands behind the extension, so there is no community test to pass. Registration is not unconditional: PIR's anti-abuse policy applies to every TLD it operates, prohibits malware, botnets, phishing and spam, and its only technical remedy is suspending the whole domain rather than a single page.

How availability of .org is checked

Availability of .org names is checked against the registry's own RDAP server (rdap.publicinterestregistry.org) and DNS-over-HTTPS. On this site your browser asks that server directly for a first, provisional answer; our server's check confirms it, and only that answer is cached. Premium suspects (such as very short names) and brand-protected labels also get a third signal, Fastly Domain Research, before they are shown as available.
