Who runs .app

.app is a generic top-level domain, delegated in 2015, and IANA records Charleston Road Registry Inc. as its sponsoring organisation, in the United States of America. The registry points registrants at registry.google for registration services. That delegation record was last updated on 11 Apr 2025; if the registry has changed hands since, IANA is where it shows up first.

Who can register a .app

Google Registry publishes no eligibility requirement for .app; the practical condition is technical rather than who you are — you need working HTTPS from the first day the name resolves. Every .app name is HTTPS-only. The whole extension sits on the HSTS preload list built into browsers, so a browser refuses a plain-HTTP connection to any .app address before it is ever made — a certificate is not optional here, and no per-site configuration turns it on. Its registry agreement with ICANN, signed 14 May 2015, is recorded as Base, Non-Sponsored — no sponsoring community stands behind the extension, so there is no community test to pass.

How availability of .app is checked

Availability of .app names is checked against the registry's own RDAP server (pubapi.registry.google) and DNS-over-HTTPS. On this site your browser asks that server directly for a first, provisional answer; our server's check confirms it, and only that answer is cached. Premium suspects (such as very short names) and brand-protected labels also get a third signal, Fastly Domain Research, before they are shown as available.
